2 Factors to Consider When Thinking of Learning Mixed Martial Arts

Upon seeing a couple of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters in action, it’s not surprising to feel inspired to give the combat sport a go, too. You’re thinking that “if they can do it, so can you”.

Maybe you can do it, maybe not. But putting your fate on “maybes” is not really a wise idea.

Instead, weigh the scales carefully. And let these factors help you form a decision.

1 – Health

Are you physically well? Are you strong enough to throw a punch? Can you kick? How’s your balance and coordination?

These are just but a few questions that you should ask yourself before taking up MMA. True enough, one of the things you can achieve through the sport is good health. But you might not be able to accomplish this if you’re in terrible shape when you begin.

Just be in decent health, for starters. If you get exhausted after just a few minutes of rumble and tumble, it looks like you’re not fit.

The solution? Work on it. Train and condition yourself.

For example, you can go for a walk every day for 30 minutes. This will help you practice endurance.

2 – Commitment

Some fighters of the combat sport make it look easy – as if anyone in the world can effortlessly pull it off. But no, it actually isn’t. And it’s not something you can learn in a day.

It takes time and you need to commit to the time investment required. Maybe free your schedule on weekends solely for learning the sport?

You also need to invest patience. As mentioned, learning the combat sport isn’t a walk in the park. There’s a possibility that it will take you almost a year to learn it fully.

If that would be the case, be patient and avoid beating yourself up along the way. Don’t berate yourself for not learning as quickly as other people.

If it only took them a month, for example, it doesn’t mean that they’re superhuman and that you’re no good. It just means that you need to focus some more.


If you’re healthy and you can commit to learning the sport, it looks like engaging in mixed martial arts is in your cards. It looks like you’re good to go.
